I never liked the analogy
That no one is an island
It implies that everyone is eternally connected
That you can’t choose who you’re connected to
And that you can’t break those connections
It’s used to try and help those
going through pain and suffering
But just like those things are solved by those around you
They’re also caused by them
In my eyes
Everyone is an island
As you go through life
You build bridges
Connecting your island to others
These bridges vary in strength
Beauty
Size
Age
History
But they all have one thing in common
You can choose
If they remain
Or if they burn
Sometimes
You need to burn the bridges
You’ve built
Fire is always an option
No matter how sturdy or old
Every bridge will burn
If you want it to
If you need it to
It will burn
But eventually
hopefully
The people of your island
Will make those ruins something new
Something joyous
Instead of blackened wood and concrete
Reminding you of what once was
It will be a celebration of what is now
Of who you are
