Shut Out
At age 17, my eyes began shutting
And all I could see was ahead.
At 24, they shut some more
Till I could only detect the dead.
In my 30s and 40s, the shutting endured,
Limiting me to only a crack.
As I lay on death row, head upon my pillow,
All I can do is look back.
